'Brave New Waters' | Outdoor Swimmer

The March Outdoor Swimmer ‘Hemispheres’ issue #71 has arrived and it’s packed with semi-aquatic tales from around the world, including Jack’s own Sydney-based feature: ‘Brave New Waters’…

‘Ever wondered what it is like to live on the other side of the world?’ This is the opener for a description of exactly what’s inside this latest issue from the folks at Outdoor Swimmer. The magazine opens in the first half with a celebration of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, before drifting southward at the midway point - you actually have to flip the magazine around to read about the upturned world of Australian and South African swimmers.

I’ve found that we all fear different things. We’ve grown accustomed to our own watery habitats. And we all take some pride in where we started out. For me, it was Cumbrian rivers and lakes around the English Lake District. We grew up thinking we were Wilderpeople, perplexed by tales of giant pike and bloodsucking lamprey eels. It was mostly freshwater for us in those early decades. Lakes, waterfalls, rivers and tarns were the places we swam.

The Down Under section of the issue includes stories about swimmers sharing Mexican calving lagoons with grey whales on their way to the Arctic, as well as diving into the open waters that crash against the rocky coastline of Cape Town. Jack’s article takes place on Bondi Beach and tracks the first 6 months of sea and rock pool swims with seemingly fearless Sydney swimmers (some of them just 9-years-old).
